A Brief History of Kerivan-Lane, Inc.

Kerivan-Lane, Inc., a plumbing, heating and fuel oil delivery company, has been serving Needham and surrounding towns for more than 85 years.

Kerivan Lane was founded in 1922 by John J. Kerivan as a plumbing and heating contracting company, providing service to local homeowners and the primary area industries such as Carters, Sherman Paper and Gamewell. Unfortunately John J. Kerivan died at a very young age of 42 in 1943. His wife Sarah ran the business until 1954. In 1954, John R. Lane, the nephew of John and Sarah Kerivan, bought the business.

John R. Lane The business transition was smooth since John R. Lane had been trained by and worked for his uncle for many years. In addition, he had a rather unique combination of accomplishments, a degree in economics from Harvard College, class of 1950, and a master plumber's license. John married Grace Skehan in May 1951. As the business grew and expanded into home heating oil, so did their family. John and Grace were blessed with five children, four of whom are actively involved in the business.

Lane Family from Kerivan-Lane, Inc. John K. Lane, a Boston College graduate class of 1976, a licensed master plumber and oil burner technician, manages the service department. Christopher M. Lane, a Boston College graduate, class of 1981, is the administrative manager, as well as a licensed oil burner technician and master plumber. He has served as a State Senator in the Massachusetts State Legislature. Suzanne L. Bandanza, a Skidmore College graduate, class of 1983 manages the company's accounting and financial matters. Deborah Lesbirel, a Boston College graduate, class of 1980, assists with sales support. Katherine Lane Wunder, a Boston College graduate, manages The Depot Store.

Kerivan-Lane lost an invaluable person in November of 1999. John R. Lane, after 45 years as the president of the company, passed away. The business continues to operate efficiently because of John's diligence in training his children and all of his employees. Kerivan-Lane, due to John's vision for the future, is one of the most competitive fuel oil companies in the area.
